Halibut fishing isn't your typical cast-and-retrieve game. We're talking about sending baits way down – sometimes hundreds of feet – to where these flat giants patrol the seafloor. We'll use a mix of techniques, from drifting with weighted jigs to anchoring up and soaking big baits. Captain William's got a sixth sense for finding the right spots, using a combo of high-tech sonar and good old-fashioned local knowledge. When a halibut hits, you'll know it! These fish fight like stubborn mules, so be ready for some serious cranking. Don't worry if you're new to this – the crew's always there to lend a hand and show you the ropes.
"Captain William is a very Knowledgeable boat Captain. I have a lot of experience on a boat and I would sail on any boat with this man. He was Professional, Knowledgeable, Entertaining. But most of all he treated my son and I like one of his closest ship mates. Captain William taught my son about the radar equipment on targeting the fish, setting courses and depths of the water. Captain William also instructed my son how to sail his boat through the waters we were fishing in. As for me, I have made a long time friend with Captain William. I am looking forward to meet up with him next Summer to go back out Fishing. I advocate to anyone up in this area of Sooke Canada to look up Fijian Son for your next fishing charter!!!" - MARK
Let's talk about our target: the Pacific halibut. These aren't your average flatfish – we're dealing with some seriously beefy bottom-dwellers. Pacific halibut can grow to monster sizes, with some topping 300 pounds and stretching over 8 feet long! Most of what we catch are in the 20-100 pound range, which is still more than enough to get your heart racing. These fish are ambush predators, lying in wait on the ocean floor before pouncing on passing prey. They've got both eyes on one side of their head (weird, right?) and can change color to blend in with their surroundings. Halibut fishing is at its best from May through September when these big guys move into shallower waters to feed. What makes them so exciting to catch? It's the combination of their size, fight, and the sweet, firm white meat that makes for some of the best fish and chips you'll ever taste.
Folks who've been out with us know – this isn't just fishing, it's an experience. There's something special about being out on these waters, surrounded by the raw beauty of Vancouver Island's coastline. Landing a big halibut is the kind of fishing story you'll be telling for years to come. And with Captain William at the helm, you're in for more than just fishing. His deep knowledge of the area, mixed with a healthy dose of humor and local stories, makes for a day you won't forget.

Pacific halibut are the giants of our local waters. These massive flatfish can grow over 8 feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds, though most we catch are in the 20-100 pound range. You'll find them hanging out on the seafloor in depths from 150-500 feet. Summer's the prime time to target halibut, when they move into shallower feeding grounds. They're ambush predators, so we use heavy gear to drop baits right to the bottom. Pink salmon heads, herring, and squid are top choices. A local trick is to bounce your rod tip to create some commotion – halibut are curious and will investigate the disturbance. Hooking into one of these brutes is a real arm-wrench er. They put up a stubborn, powerful fight all the way to the boat. But the payoff is worth it – halibut are prized for their firm, white meat that's excellent for fish and chips or grilled steaks. Just be ready for a workout. When a big 'but decides to dive, you'd better have your drag set right!
